There is something wonderfully familiar about a good washed coffee, and this lot from Sandalwood Estate is a fine example of why the process remains a classic. It is clean and full-bodied, with dried fruit and stone fruit making way for gentle tea and citrus notes, before settling into a warm hazelnut finish. Grown at an estate with over a century of coffee history, this is a balanced, easy-drinking cup with just enough complexity to keep things interesting.

Aromas of dried raisins and ripe stone fruit open the cup, leading into delicate tea-like notes and a gentle tang of mosambi. Subtle hazelnut undertones emerge through the finish, adding warmth and depth. Medium sweetness and a full body give the cup structure, while a very gentle bitterness rounds out the profile, leaving a clean, balanced and lingering finish.

Ripe coffee cherries are carefully harvested and pulped to remove the outer fruit. The beans then undergo controlled fermentation, allowing the remaining mucilage to break down naturally before being thoroughly washed with clean water. They are subsequently dried to an optimal moisture level, producing a clean and articulate cup that brings forward the coffee’s inherent sweetness, acidity and distinctive origin character.
