Our first lot from Kerala is a washed Arabica from Seethargundu Estate that belongs to the POABS Organic Estates group. Nestled in the cool, picturesque hills of Nelliyampathy, this estate is located within the majestic Sahyadri mountain range, renowned for its rich biodiversity and recognized as one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots by the IUCN.

The Nelliyampathy region, just 65 km from Palakkad, boasts fertile valleys lined with tea, coffee, cardamom, and other plantations that thrive in its ideal climate, characterized by annual rainfall of around 4000 mm and temperatures ranging from 14°C to 30°C. Seethargundu Estate stands out not only for its high-quality coffee but also for its breathtaking views of the valley, offering visitors an unforgettable panorama.

The cup displays a bouquet of citrus aromas including citrus blossom and orange zest. It is full-bodied and characterized by bright and juicy citric acidity with notes of simple syrup and hints of mild walnuts in the finish. The perfect combination of citrus expressions, medium sweetness and nutty undertones is a delight for enthusiasts of clean and uniform washed coffees.

At Seethargundu Estate, coffee processing reflects a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic cultivation practices. The estate produces washed coffee using a careful, environmentally friendly method that enhances the unique attributes of each bean. Ripe coffee cherries are meticulously hand-picked, ensuring only the best quality fruits are selected.

Following harvesting, the cherries are depulped, removing the outer skin and pulp, which is essential for the washed processing technique. The cherries are then placed in water tanks for fermentation, a crucial step that allows flavors to develop while naturally eliminating mucilage without the use of chemicals. After fermentation, the beans are thoroughly washed to remove any remaining impurities, contributing to their clean taste.

To preserve organic integrity, the beans are sun-dried on elevated patios, allowing the natural sweetness to shine. Seethargundu Estate stands out as one of the two Demeter-certified biodynamic estates globally, underscoring its dedication to producing high-quality, organically grown coffee that respects both the environment and the rich biodiversity of the Nelliyampathy region.

About the farm

POABS Organic Estates is committed to excellence, holding certifications in various organic and social compliance standards, including NPOP, EU, USDA NOP, JAS, Demeter, ISO, and Fairtrade. The estate places a strong emphasis on environmental management, focusing on the conservation of its rich biodiversity, including trees, flora, and fauna. A robust nursery is maintained to support the planting of diverse species, ensuring ecological balance.

The estate features 42 check-dams that play a crucial role in water conservation during the summer months, contributing significantly to irrigation and enhancing the local water table. Our exemplary water conservation practices are complemented by regular de-silting of the check-dams to preserve ecological integrity.

POABS adheres rigorously to the Government of India’s Plantations Labour Act of 1951, providing essential amenities such as free housing, water, electricity, and sanitation for all workers. Additionally, the estate supports community welfare with on-site creches for children, a primary school, and a dispensary for health care, referring serious cases to Thrissur Medical College at the estate’s expense. Fairtrade initiatives have had a profound positive impact on workers and their families over the past three years, enhancing their living conditions, access to education, medical care, and overall wellbeing through continued investment and support.
