As we navigate the expansive and intricate landscape of specialty coffees, characterized by advanced fermentation techniques, we find a deep appreciation for the traditional elements of washed coffee lots. Discovering a washed lot with distinctive characteristics and remarkably sweet but balanced flavors often influences our choice for a daily coffee staple. Our association with Unakki Estate commenced through ongoing discussions with Utsav Gowda, an enthusiastic young farmer passionately managing the operations at the estate. An aspiring lawyer balancing his academic pursuits with the challenges of safeguarding his coffee crop from unpredictable rains, Utsav embodies the promising future of Indian coffee.

This washed lot from Unnakki Estate offers a refined and balanced cup profile, ideal for daily enjoyment. It features medium sweetness with a well-rounded and balanced body, complemented by balanced acidity. The flavor profile includes delightful notes of cane sugar, apricot, and honey. When enjoyed black, these characteristics are particularly accentuated, allowing the coffee’s best qualities to shine through.
Unnakki Estate’s washed coffee is a meticulously processed Arabica coffee consisting of the Chandragiri Varietal. The process begins with the selection of ripe cherries, which are then pulped and subjected to a 12-hour fermentation period. Following fermentation, the cherries are thoroughly washed to remove all mucilage. The beans are then carefully dried over 9 to 12 days, ensuring optimal development of flavor and aroma.

Characteristics
Unakki Estate derives its name from the ancient “den of snakes” that has been an integral part of the region for over 400 years, revered by the local community. This name also pays homage to the resilient coffee community that has thrived amidst changing climate conditions. Situated in the Joldal Palya region of Chikmagalur, Unakki Estate is managed by Mr. P.E. Suresh, an advocate and fourth-generation planter, along with his wife, Mrs. Y.J. Sahara, and their son, Mr. Utsav Gowda, an advocate by profession.
Spanning 115 acres at an altitude of 4,000-4,500 feet above sea level, the estate is enriched with native shade trees such as banana, jackfruit, rosewood, avocado, dadap, and Indian kino. Arabica coffee, particularly the Chandragiri variety, is the primary crop, grown entirely under shade and intercropped with banana, oranges, avocados, and pomegranates.
The estate employs a dedicated labor force of 50-60 permanent workers and aspires to be a leader in coffee quality in the region, thanks to the invaluable contributions of Rakhi, R.D. Prakash, Suraj, and Thyagaraj.
